Move over, Stephen King. Nine Dual Language and Arts Magnet Middle School students are set to be published in an anthology of spooky stories.

Spine-Chiller –Tales from Connecticut will feature short pieces of scary fiction, written by middle and high school students throughout the state. Young Writers USA, which publishes the anthology, called for submissions of 100 words or less. The entries had to tell a creepy story and leave the reader in suspense while adhering to the strict word limit.

Young Writers received over 4,500 submissions. DLAMMS teacher Analisse Rios selected nine student entries for the contest and all of them were selected for publication. The anthology will be released on Feb. 28, 2018, and will be submitted to the Library of Congress in Washington DC as well as the British Library in London, U.K. The two libraries are the largest and second largest libraries in the world in terms of cataloged volumes.

The following story by 6th grader Kai Bixby is among the spine chillers selected for publication:

I was walking down the dirt trail, trying to find my way back to the main road. It was a rainy night and all I could feel were raindrops. I looked over at my partner, he was shaking. I thought he was fine because he tends to get cold easily. We kept on walking and he stops to turn his head. “What’s wrong?” I ask. Nothing. I turned my head to see what he’s looking at, and all I see is a black figure. I look away and when I looked back at my partner....nobody was there.
